These reports was presented at Fertilizers and Agriculture Conference IFA hold in Moscow in October 2009.

The Concept of Fertilizer Best Management Practices and its implementation by Dr. Svetlana Ivanova, IPNI, Moscow, Russia.

The presentation reviews the rational use of fertilizers and its role in the sustainable development of agricultural production based on the following three criteria: economic, social and environmental performance. Ideally, these criteria should be balanced when making certain management decisions. However, in practice, this balance is rarely achievable since it is not always possible to find a single correct solution for a given situation. The concept of sustainable development is continuously being improved with increased knowledge and changing priorities. Rational systems of fertilizer application can be understood as using the right nutrient source(s) at the right rate, right time and right place, i.e. whenever and wherever necessary. To select a rational system of fertilizer management, agricultural enterprises should take into account local soil, climate, weather conditions, particular crop characteristics and the specificity of its cultivation. The presentation details the scientific principles and the results of applied research, which are taken into account when formulating rational systems of fertilizer management taking into account the local conditions, the characteristics of crops as well as the socio-economic situation.

Dissemination of knowledge and technology is an integral, if not the most important and most difficult, part of the introduction of balanced fertilization. The presentation contains a detailed scheme for the development and implementation of rational systems for fertilization and crop cultivation.

Fertilizer use trend in Russia in relation to crops and medium-term forecast for domestic fertilizer consumption by Dr. Vladimir Nosov, IPNI, Moscow, Russia

The average fertilizer application rates to major crops by agricultural enterprises (excepting commercial farmers and subsistence farmers, or households) are presented for Russia. Thus, it is estimated that fertilizer use by crop statistics is collected for 70% of total crop acreage in the country. In 2007-08, agricultural enterprises applied 35 kg nutrients per ha of total sowing area, including 22 kg N, 8 kg P2O5 and 5 kg K2O. Mineral fertilizer use in Russia continues to be on a gradual improving trend, nevertheless, fertilizer rates are still far from the recommendations. There are no positive developments as regards fertilizer application to annual and perennial grasses compared to other crops.
IPNI has developed the AgriStats software projecting mineral fertilizer use by crops in the world. These estimates are based on possible developments of world agriculture in the future. We assess the crop yield potential and the attainable crop yield, which is realistically possible under the best management practices. The AgriStats software calculates growth rate of crop sowing area using both historical data and staff estimates for the long-term perspective. There are two general scenarios: intensive and extensive. The intensive scenario takes into account mineral fertilizer rates required for attainable crop yield. The extensive scenario shows future estimates of nutrient consumption based on current fertilization practices. Detailed forecasts on mineral fertilizer application to wheat in Russia are shown in the presentation.
